In cooperation with the R&D Division Embedded Systems at OFFIS the Embedded Hardware/Software Systems Group sees its core expertise in building a bridge between Computer Science and Electrical Engineering as scientific disciplines applied mainly in the development of software and hardware for Embedded Systems.

A system's architecture has a crucial impact on its quality and performance. Consequently, particular importance is attached to the first phase in system design, which involves the system specification and

architecture definition. Powerful tools for finding the optimum architecture and an automated synthesis of the architecture in an implementation also determine the commercial success. Together with the R&D Division Embedded Systems the research carried out at the VLSI group and tools developed in the ES/CS division aim to bridge the gaps that still exist between the individual abstract levels in the embedded systems' design process, or in optimising processes to achieve various design objectives, and attempts to bridge them using concepts, development languages and software tools.
